Ramallah, Feb 15 (Prensa Latina) British Consul to Jerusalem Philip Hall warned on Monday that the Israeli settlements on the occupied Palestinian territories are an obstacle to the beginning of peace negotiations between both parties, and described them as illegal.
Quoted by WAFA news agency, Hall expressed concern about the settlers' violence against the members of that Arab people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
The last five years were difficult, there was no opportunity to improve the situation on the ground, especially since the previous US administration recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a decision that the United Kingdom has rejected, the consul said.
In early 2020, then US President Donald Trump presented the questioned Deal of the Century under which Israel could annex up to 30 percent of the occupied West Bank, while the Palestinians would have the right to a discontinuous homeland, a sort of islands surrounded by colonies.
Last week, the Arab League held an emergency meeting at which it advocated for reviving talks between the Palestinians and the Zionist government in order to overcome the long-standing conflict peacefully.
During his virtual speech at the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Palestinian National Authority (PNA) President Mahmoud Abbas sought support from that body to convene an international peace conference encouraged by the interest of channeling talks with the counterpart.
